Tyler Bjerke was born in the Portland area and fell in love with photography in high school. He currently bartends at the Night Light and continues to explore his surroundings through the camera lens.
Some of the subjects displayed here are traditionally beautiful — a young woman’s luminous skin, the graceful curves of the upright bass — and yet, they are framed to display less obvious features, expressing that beauty goes deeper than the initial façade. Meanwhile, other photos showcase traditionally dark locations — an industrial chimney, a mausoleum — in which Tyler has found unexpected visions of splendor.
Using over-saturation and high contrast, Tyler invites the viewer to look beyond the surface of each image, revealing textures, colors and shapes that would otherwise fade into the background. These heightened elements redefine the notion of beauty.
