Opens Thursday July 3rd to be on display all month long.
Brin Levinson Westford Vermont is a beautiful place. It's full of color in the summertime. Everything is lush and saturated. Winter is black and white. I did a lot of drawing in Westford. Almost everything I did was black pencil or pen and ink drawings. At daycare, the teachers thought I may be disturbed. My parents convinced them I just really like black. My Grandmother is a famous landscape painter in Virginia. I was always surrounded by artists.
Eventually, over the years color become a large part of my work. I've had dreams of places with colors like brilliant stained glass windows. It made me realize that color is something I need to use and understand as an artist. I draw a lot of inspiration from my dreams and places I've been. The current "Urban Dreamscape" series is a reflection of my most nostalgic dreams. The dreams are surreal affectations of places that I have never really been. They have a feeling like old memories.
I moved to California to study animation at the California Institute of the Arts. This was where my painting really developed. People and narrative became dominant elements in my work. I like imagery that tells part of a story leaving you wondering how it ends or how it began. The mystery is the most compelling part. I graduated from Cal Arts in 2001. Now I live, paint and show in Portland Oregon.
